Cost of Living in New Zealand for Students

How much does it cost to live in New Zealand?

Most students budget US$1,000–2,200 per month (NZD 1,500–3,400). Auckland is the most expensive city; Dunedin, Christchurch, and Wellington are friendlier to budgets. Overall New Zealand is noticeably cheaper than Australia — and the scenery is free.

Housing: US$500–1,100 / month

  • Student halls: NZD 300–450/wk (first-year students often live here)
  • Shared flat: NZD 200–350/wk
  • Studios: NZD 350–550/wk

Many universities guarantee first-year international students a place in halls, which is the easiest—if not cheapest—start. After that, flatting (flat sharing) with other students is the norm.

Food: US$280–550 / month

Café lunches run NZD 12–18 and are a big part of Kiwi culture. Groceries at Countdown/New World/Pak'nSave cost NZD 60–90/week, and cooking at home is dramatically cheaper than eating out. Flat dinners — rotating who cooks — are a Kiwi student institution.

Transport: US$50–110 / month

Monthly passes run NZD 80–140 with student discounts, and New Zealand's city centres are compact and walkable. Auckland has buses, trains, and ferry; most students elsewhere cycle or walk.

Everything else

  • Activities: US$100–250 (weekend hikes and beaches are free; cinema and events NZD 20–80)
  • Health insurance: US$30–60 (university/private plans ~NZD 45–70/mo; ACC covers accident care for everyone)
  • Phone & internet: US$20–40 (SIM plans NZD 15–30; broadband NZD 70–85)
